Lost in a Book

I am constantly getting lost in books … and this time — it’s Gary D. Schmidt’s fault. I’m reading his book What Came from the Stars at the moment — and this morning I found myself thinking in an alien language. Seriously.

What Came from the Stars by Gary Schmidt

In Schmidt’s book, a race of hostile aliens (the O’Mondim) are searching for a beautiful (either extremely high-tech or possibly magic) necklace. The aliens seem to be able to control the weather (I haven’t finished the book yet, so I’m still in the “this is what I think is going on” stage) and they cause massive storms to hit Plymouth, MA. The storms are described in such a way that you FEEL you have just been in a storm … if you’ve read any of Schmidt’s other books — you know what I mean.

So, late into the evening I was reading about these aliens who are causing awful storms that leave destruction in their wake — very rucca indeed. These monsters leave fah-smelling seaweed all over the place — and I wake up this morning to the most rucca storms! And that is exactly what I thought. “What a rucca day!”

Rucca? Fah?Thanks, Gary Schmidt – now I’m thinking in alien.

What was the last book you fell into?
